Screw the dead and all those pathetic jam bands like kimock, garaj mahal, lotus, etc they are pathetic next to this. http://www.archive.org/details/Fuck_you_Im_drunk_1 This is why the LMA exists - Hunter and Barlow would weep knowing they couldn't write lyrics this beautiful ;) (to be honest, i really do love this song being one of the wee folk)

curious though ... were the lyrics actually penned by a native Irish, or some american derivitive thereof?

my guess is the latter.

definitely not true irish - beer is not in the "trunk" it would be "in the boot" - a car's trunk is a "boot" in ireland - but still friggin hilarious. - just doesnt rhyme :)

If Im not mistaken The song is by the Boston Punk band Dropkick Murphy. They had a minor hit two years ago with a remake of Tessie as a rallying cry for the Boston Red Sox.DKM kicks ass yes but they couldn't hold Shane MacGowans pint. They wish they were as legit as Shane and the Pogues

That's interesting - sounds like something Dropkick would do. Thanks for the info.

MacGowan - who is he?? (and i call myself Irish- hah) seems like ive heard the name, but memory cells are deficient.

Shane MacGowan was the lead singer of The Pogues. A band that took traditional irish music and blended it with Punk. Shane is a genius and also a complete lush with bad teeth. If you ever can find it on IFC they run a documentary called "If I should fall from Grace with God the Shane MacGowan Story." Very enjoyable.

One of the best Christmas Songs of all time is called Fairytale of New York. First line to the song:
"It was Christmas eve,in the drunktank" Its worth listening to a few of their songs.
Pogues is short for Pogue mahone which is gaelic for kiss my arse

'nuff ced.

Shane IS the lead singer of the Pogues. While it is pretty easy to assume he would be dead or face down in a gutter somewhere, the Pogues are set to do 4 nights at the Fillmore in October. I, for one, am extremely excited. I saw a number of shows of the Pogues, Violent Femmes and Mojo Nixon in the 80s that were hands down the most fun I've had at a concert (including the boys). Last time I saw the Pogues, Joe Strummer was handling lead singing duties since Shane was not able to tour at that time. But the Pogues are back with Shane. Should be a blast.

Truthfully, if you had asked me back in the late 80's, early 90's if Mr. McGowan would be dead in five years, i would've put money on it. But hell, i've been surprised by stuff before and will no doubt again. And yeah, it's good to see him back with the rest of the Pogues. Cuz, let's face it, he was the core of that band. Ack! give me Dirty Old Town any day of the week. And i'm only half irish.

Speaking of Dirty Old Towm, when U2 played Boston Garden on St. Patrick's Day on the Zoo TV tour (with local greats the Pixies opening), Larry Mullen sang "Dirty Old Town". It was definitely a high concert moment for me to be among 1000s of folks in the garden on St. Patty's Day singing along.

Dropkick Murphy's are an ass kicking band. It's great to see them pop up on this board. Just shows Head's don't just listen to one type of music.
